If time / brain allows I normally shoot with a single focus point selected (usually an outer one) so that this is around the eye region when shooting a vertical portrait. This seems to work most of the time.

Also need to think about how much contrast around the focus area - should not have been a problem for this situation.

Either way I got a fair few less than perfect shots and I certainly can't claim lack of chance to learn the camera :-)

Hi Mark. I usually leave comments of what's coming up on the blog; sometimes not as early as I'd like. But you'll notice that March's session is already listed on the end of this month's blog. But I appreciate your comments and will try to be more efficient in the future. The studio facility isn't always the fastest because the newsletter has to go to press so far ahead of time. Keep an eye on the blog.

What would have been useful was some warning that we'd be working with wide apertures -- I would have brought along a better selection of lenses and ND filters, as appropriate. Preparation is important. Perhaps you could post details like this on this blog, in future, and specifically direct people to it via the studio publicity?

Doesn't this point to the old saw that the more automatic the camera, the less the human is inclined to understand the mechanics of photography? Even if a modern camera does have manual settings there's a huge attraction is just letting the technology get on with it. Your observation that this particular camera's bad rep is probabaly down to poor choices by the photographer rings true. I'd like to know how many dSLR owners choose anything other than the default pattern (to say nothing of leaving the thing welded to auto-white balance rather than making a more nuanced choice).

But I don't think that camera manufacturers help with the issue of focus, in particular. What I'd really like is a split-prism type manual focus aid which (correct me if I'm wrong) just isn't available on most dSLRs. Simply selecting a different pattern doesn't cut it, in my opinion. Many lenses, too, don't offer a big old rubberised focus-ring

"Why not use a honeycomb grid? Simply because the quality of light is not as good."

Thank You, finally someone gets it...
Fresnel Lighting has a hard yet softness about it that cannot be gotten with strobes. I am a purist, go figure. :)
Nice post, thanks for sharing.

Thanks again for the last Portrait Group - I have enjoyed it a lot and Lydia is a great model to work with, though I need to learn and get used to directing the model more.
